Description

Four painted wooden panel boards mounted together to form one large panel. Together they depict a killer whale with a black oval shaped labret in the bottom of its mouth. The centre has a large face with the dorsal and tail fins depicted on each side. Painted design in red and black with Northwest Coast stylized designs.

Narrative

In 1967, Bill Reid was commissioned to paint this panel as part of a temporary entrance arch for the Vancouver Art Gallery. Facing Georgia Street, it marked the opening of the exhibition "Arts of the Raven: Masterworks by the Northwest Coast Indian" which Reid organized with Wilson Duff and Bill Holm.
