Narrative

The maker of this basket is unknown. Names of individual basket makers were generally not recorded by collectors and because baskets were so widely and avidly collected, and have a long history as items made for trade or sale, determining their provenance often relies on comparisons with others typical of a region. This coiled cedar root basketry was made by the Stl’atl’imx, or Lillooet, although items can share aspects of form and construction with that of their Interior Salish neighbours, the Nlaka’pamux, and even of the Coast Salish. Within each regional style there are also variations influenced through exchange and trade, changing functions, and personal creativity.
