Description

Black haori (羽織) or jacket/overcoat with the lining or haura (羽裏) with colourful designs known as gaku’ura (額裏). The neck and centre opening are edged with a wide black band. The sleeves are short with hanging panels and an opening under the arms. There are white five family crests or kamon (家紋) known as maru-ni-mitsu aoi (丸に三つ葵; three wild ginger leaves in a circle) on the upper front, on the back and on the back of both sleeves. The lining on the upper sleeves have floral and coral motifs. The designs on the lower front and back lining are village scenes and seascapes with snowed covered pine tree and ume plum blossom motifs.

History Of Use

Haori (羽織) (jacket or overcoat); a formal jacket worn over a kimono. In the past, haori (羽織) was worn as an overcoat only by men, but now worn by both men and women. Decorated linings called gaku’ura (額裏) are usually used just for men’s haori.
