Figure Item Number: A2.581 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Toy boat. Roughly boat shaped, flat piece of wood. "Alexandrovsk" written on bottom.

Narrative

The village of Nanwalek was originally the site of a Russian Trading Post called Alexandrovsk. It was later known as English Bay. In 1991, the community changed the name of English Bay to Nanwalek. Many of the current residents are of mixed Russian and Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) lineage. The carving was said to be from Alaska, and has Alexandrovsk written on the base, so presumably that is where it was collected.
