Description

Mask with trunk-like projection extending forwards from top of the head. Mask built on a wood frame, lined with woven plant fibre. Heavily decorated with cowries and areas of beadwork on forehead and around side. Face has cowrie shell eyes outlined with beads, and a wooden nose and mouth. Bottom edged with plant fibre, which has been split into finer pieces below the face.

History Of Use

Sacalumbo mask. The mask would be used with the related shirt (K4.349) in the mukanda, male initiation ceremonies. Sacalumbo is one of the masked entities, generally known as makishi, that participate in the male initiation processes and performances.
