Description

Painting of an angel in a natural landscape. The angel is in colonial dress, with a blue tunic embellished with gold decoration and lace at cuff and collar. The visible sleeve is red and slashed to show white inside. A brown, green and gold cape drapes to the angel’s left. Green decorated leggings end at the knees, below which are tall white boots secured with ribbons. A blue helmet with a wide rim, gold embellishment and three large feathers sits atop the angels head and orderly curled hair. His wings are white and brown edged with purple and are slightly extended. In his right hand the angel holds a sheathed rapier, while in his left is a decorated round shield with a pointed cone emerging from the centre. The background of the painting shows lush green foliage, trees, and a single pink and white flower in the lower right corner. Four birds sit high up in the trees on either side of the angel, and the sky is shades of orange, white and blue. The back of the painting shows faint printed text and images, reversed- suggesting the painting has been applied to the front of a canvas bag or the like.
