Mask Item Number: A1964 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Carved, wooden bear mask with human eyes, nose and mouth. The face is mostly black with green nostril and ovoids that outline the black eyes; brow is black. The mouth has carved teeth; the mouth is painted black with green ovoids repeated along the upper lip. The ears are attached to the top of the head and are decorated with black U-forms. The inside of the mask is hollow. The mask is painted black and green with stylized designs.

Narrative

The Tla’amin were previously known as the Sliammon. The teal coloured paint is said to have been used by artists from Bute Inlet.
