Devil King Mask Item Number: 2946/5 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Devil king mask with a black face, multi-coloured twisting horns and a silver crown. The nose has four large ridges above pink nostrils. The mouth has pink lips and four spiked white teeth framed on each side by a pair of fangs. The eyes protrude slightly with irises that fade from yellow to orange at the edges. Each cheek has two large curved ridges. The ears are flame-shaped with coral coloured tips. At the top of the face are four wavy yellow triangular projections.

History Of Use

Supay mask; used in the diablada dance performances, during the Virgin of Candelaria feast days.

Narrative

Purchased from a festival mask rental shop in Puno. (Same maker as mask 2946/17.)
