Necklace Item Number: 2878/7 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Woman's short, choker-style necklace composed of six strands of oval red and round white glass beads in an alternating pattern, organized in four sections separated by three carved, flat, elliptical cow bone pieces. Each bone piece is incised with a dark brown pattern of four groups of concentric circles arranged in a line down the centre surrounded by dots. The strands are tied together at each end and there is a metal hook closure attached to the stands with fibre.
This necklace is worn tightly around the throat.
The cow bone pieces were carved, then the decorative pattern was incised onto the surface with a bow drill. The designs was then rubbed with soot to make them more distinctive.
This necklace is made with Czech trade beads, and the cow bone pieces were carved in Broun village, Bumboret Valley. The necklace was made by a woman from the Badzekeiy clan who married into the Bulesinga clan.
