Iconographic Meaning

The 19th-century illustrator and ceramicist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846–1905) created the straight-talking, long-suffering caricature of the Portuguese people, Zé Povinho, here shown raising his arms in a gesture of defiance against the international credit agency, Moody’s.
