Description

Wooden barbed hook with short length of cord attached. Two carved wooden arms lashed together in a "v"-shape. Bone point lashed at an acute angle to main arm. Both point and secondary "v" lashings bound with root. Hole drilled through shank and leader line secured. One hook attached to end of a weighted cross pole by a short leader.

History Of Use

Fish hook, for catching halibut. Usually used for bottom fishing (often in pairs). One hook attached to either end of weighted cross pole by a short leader.

Narrative

According to the 1934 Raley collection catalogue, the hook was collected in Kitkatla. Most likely collected sometime during the period Raley was based in northern BC, in Kitamat and Port Simpson (1893-1914).
