Description

Mask with an elongated face, protruding cylindrical eyes, and a recurving tongue that protrudes downwards. Two eye holes bored on each side of nose. Colours used are black, red and white.

History Of Use

Worn by dancer who preceded chief through potlatch, when he was distributing money.

Narrative

Collected during winter and spring of 1961-1962 on several field trips.

Iconographic Meaning

Represents Xwixwi, a Kwakwaka'wakw form of the Salish Sxwayxwey.
