Description

Dark brown wooden dish on a round pedestal-like base with sloping sides. Bowl has rounded sides, thick walls, and flat edges. Edges of pedestal have 4 holes, one of which looks broken. Exterior of dish is smooth, while interior of bowl is rough. Base is carved out underneath.

History Of Use

Food bowl. The height of a bowl reflects the social status of the eater, with the highest bowls used by chiefs.

Narrative

Purchased by the donor in an antique store in the Torajan highlands in 2002.
