Gloves Item Number: 3027/2 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Pair of beaded hide gloves, or gauntlets. A fringe falls from either side of each gauntlet. A large red flower is beaded onto the top of the hand, with green leaves and small round blue flowers to the bottom. All are surrounded by a white bead border. Glove top has matching beaded flowers and foliage in red, shades of blue, yellow and green, also surrounded by a white border. The underside is decorated by stitching in concentric rectangles.

Narrative

Jean Nemi said she inherited a pair of moccasins and gauntlets (3027/1-2) in 1978, that had previously been owned by Father Joe A. McDonagh, who she was told worked among the Inuit, Prairie (Saskatchewan) and norther BC Indigenous peoples, as a Catholic missionary. The donor was also told that McDonagh was presented with the gloves and moccasins when he was made an honorary chief of one of the 'northern tribes', c. 1935-1940. An appraiser told the donor the style of beadwork might suggest a Carrier (Dakelhne) provenance, perhaps from the Prince George area?
