Description

Long shallow model canoe. The canoe is carved from a reddish-brown wood and the exterior has been lacquered. A hole has been drilled through the bow and the stern. The bow and stern are identical.

History Of Use

A model of a eastern style canoe. Anthropologist William Elmendorf noted that: “Most fathers made play canoes for their young sons. Boys played with these in the water from the age of four or five. (1960:227).”

Narrative

This canoe was collected in North Vancouver, between the years 1893-1930 by the Missionary, Dr. George Raley. He collected it during the period when he was a missionary and teacher at the Coqualeetza Residential school in Sardis.
