Basket Item Number: 3074/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Tall, round basket has a willow root under-cage, with wrapped root. Base contains a central punt. Horizontal sections of root are dyed slightly darker to make a ringed pattern. Remnants of red dye can be seen in a few areas. From both top rim and 6cm from bottom hang fringes of small, conical, tin noisemakers attached to short lengths of hide.
Originally owned by the donor's late husband's grandmother, Eleanor Caldwell Browne. She taught at a government Indian school in Indian Valley, near Greenville, Plumas County, California, from 1897-99. It is thought that the baskets were a gift to her during that time.
