Description

Small round basket with imbricated decoration. Basket is wide at middle, inclining to a smaller base and mouth. Coil construction is tight, with a tight, even redbud root wrapping. The imbricated decoration is in large triangle and square motifs, six in all. Thin, short, imbricated lines decorate the shoulder just under the rim.

Narrative

Originally owned by the donor's late husband's grandmother, Eleanor Caldwell Browne. She taught at a government Indian school in Indian Valley, near Greenville, Plumas County, California, from 1897-99. It is thought that the baskets were a gift to her during that time.
