Description

Slightly flaring gambrel brown-red slipped terracotta bowl. Traces of red-orange and white paint. Molded technique; burnished surface. The exterior sides have incised bands with four profile monkey figures, 7.6 cm of interspace, and a triple rim band (central band segmented). The monkeys have arched backs, curled tails, frontal heads to right outlined by 2.2 cm reed stamp circles and .5 cm reed stamped eyes. The mouth lines are dotted at both ends and ears are rectangular. Broken and repaired.

Narrative

The motif is drawn from Trophy Head Cult iconography, then dominant at nearby center at Ocucaje, but rendered in traditional Callango Early Paracas stylistic conventions.
