Description
Round embroidered hat with straw in the interior. The top has a green background and an embroidered off-white band forming different sewn motifs: (1) two bands in "Y" shape with protruding yellow triangle decorations at borders and purple triangles at base, (2) two triangular designs with red triangle at base, band of orange-red, green, pink, purple and yellow squares above; protruding yellow triangles at borders. A hole at the centre of the hat has fabric in the interior with an embroidered cross that rises when the hat is worn. Protruding triangles at rim, red fabric at the bottom and non-dyed fabric in the head area.
History Of Use
Would have been worn by Bolivian women from the Lake Titicaca area.
Specific Techniques
Some natural dyes commonly used are: red (cochineal insect), green (Chillca plant), yellow (qolle flower), purple (Awaypilli plant or a mix of cochineal and a fixative like copper or iron oxide) and blue (tara bean and blue collpa or iron sulphate).
