Oolichan Oil Scoop Item Number: 3100/7 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Wooden oil scoop carved out of a single piece of wood. Scoop is wide and shallow, with a long, flat, spade-like front edge. A wide, angled rim is carved around the side and back top edges. Handle is long, with a large hand-hold carved through the centre. Scoop is partially covered in a shiny, dark, oily substance.

History Of Use

Object could have been used as a canoe bailer or an oolichan oil scoop. Its circular handle would have protected the hand while bailing along the bottom of a canoe. However its greasy residue suggests it was last used for scooping oil.
