Description
Byzantine coin of Phocas, 602-610. Obverse: bust of Phocas, facing front, with consular robes and crown with pendilia; to left, he holds a mappa; to right, he holds a cross; to left, inscription says ‘MFOCA’; to right, ‘ERAVS’. Reverse: large ‘XXXX’; to right, ‘Ϛ’; above, ‘ANNO’; beneath, ‘NIK…A’. This coin is overstruck on a coin of the previous emperor, Maurice Tiberius. To the left of the ‘XXXX’ on the reverse, it says ‘MA…RIC’.
