Description

Byzantine coin of Phocas, 602-610. Obverse: bust of Phocas, facing front, with consular robes and crown with cross; to left, he holds a mappa; to right, he holds a cross; to left, inscription is illegible; to right, it says ‘P’. Reverse: large ‘[X]XXX’; to right, ‘Ϛ’; above, ‘[A]NNO’; in exergue, ‘[C]ONΓ’. Beneath the bust on the obverse, there is an upside-down 'IbER', indicating that this coin was overstruck on an earlier coin of the emperor Maurice Tiberius.
