Description

Byzantine coin of Heraclius, 610-641. Obverse: bust of an earlier emperor, facing right; to left, inscription is illegible; to right, it says ‘PPAV’; there is a circular punch on the emperor’s head, which is approximately 1.5cm in diameter; within the circular punch, there is a bust of Heraclius, facing forwards; he wears a crown with a cross; to right, monogram. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, star; to right, cross; above, cross; there is a circular punch at the bottom of the ‘M’, which is also approximately 1.5cm in diameter; within circular punch, it says ‘SCL’; to right, small ‘S’. This coin is an example of an earlier coin being countermarked. Monogram corresponds to number 22 in the Sear catalogue.
