Description

Byzantine coin of Manuel I, 1143-1180. Obverse: Christ, enthroned; to left, star. Reverse: two figures, standing and facing front; to left, Manuel I, wearing a loros, which is an embroidered and jewelled scarf, and a divitision, which is a military tunic; he holds a globus cruciger in his left hand; to right, the Virgin Mary, wearing a pallium, which is a woolen cloak, and a maphorium, which is a type of medieval wimple worn by women; she also has a halo; she raises her right arm towards Manuel I in order to crown him. Coin is concave.
