Description

Byzantine coin of Manuel I, 1143-1180. Obverse: Christ, enthroned; he has a nimbus cruciger around his head, which is a cross within a halo; he wears a pallium, a woolen cloak; to right and left, stars; to left, inscription says ‘IC’; to right, ‘XC’. Reverse: two figures, standing and facing front; to left, Manuel I, wearing a loros, which is an embroidered and jewelled scarf, and a divitision, which is a military tunic; to right, the Virgin Mary, wearing a pallium and a maphorium, which is a type of medieval wimple worn by women; she also has a halo; she raises her right arm towards Manuel I in order to crown him. The inscription on the obverse in translation says ‘Jesus Christ’. Coin is concave.
