Description
Byzantine coin of Manuel I, 1143-1180. Obverse: Christ, enthroned; he has a nimbus cruciger around his head, which is a cross within a halo; to right, inscription says ‘X’. Reverse: two figures, standing and facing front; to left, Manuel I, wearing a loros, which is an embroidered and jewelled scarf, and a divitision, which is a military tunic; to left, he holds a labarum, a military standard; to right, he holds a globus cruciger; to right, the Virgin Mary, wearing a pallium, which is a woolen cloak, and a maphorium, which is a type of medieval wimple worn by women; she also has a halo; she raises her right arm towards Manuel I in order to crown him; to left, inscription says ‘A’; to right, ‘IΦΔECΠO’. Coin is concave.
