Description

Byzantine coin of Manuel I, 1143-1180. Obverse: the Virgin Mary, enthroned; to right, she holds the infant Christ; both have halos; to left, inscription says ‘MP’; to right, ‘Θ[V]’. Reverse: Manuel I, standing and facing front; he wears a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, he holds a labarum, a military standard; to right, he holds a globus cruciger with a patriarchal cross. The inscription on the obverse in translation says ‘Mother of God’. Coin is concave.
