Description

Byzantine coin from the Empire of Thessalonica, 1224-1244. Obverse: bust of Christ, facing front; he has a nimbus cruciger around his head, which is a cross within a halo; to left, inscription says ‘[I]C’; to right, ‘X[C]’; the head of Christ has been struck twice, making it appear as if there is one head over top of the other. Reverse: the Archangel Michael, standing and facing front; he has a halo and wings. Coin is slightly concave.
