Description

Byzantine coin of Andronicus II, 1282-1328. Obverse: bust of the Virgin Mary; she has a halo; she wears a pallium, which is a woolen cloak, and a maphorium, which is a type of medieval wimple worn by women; she raises her hands in prayer; to right, inscription says ‘ΘV’. Reverse: two figures, standing and facing front; to left, Andronicus II; to right, Michael IX, his son and co-emperor; between them, they hold a long cross; to left, inscription says ‘AИΔRONIK’; to right, ‘MXA’. Coin is slightly concave.
