Byzantine coin of Andronicus I, 1183-1185. Obverse: the Virgin Mary, standing and facing front; she has a halo; on her chest, these is the head of Christ as an infant; to left, inscription says ‘MP’; to right, it says ‘ΘV’. Reverse: two figures, standing and facing front; to left, Andronicus I, who has a beard; he wears a loros, a jewelled and embroidered scarf; to right, Christ, who has a halo; Christ raises his right hand above Andronicus I’s head in order to crown him; to left, inscription says ‘AN’; above, it says ‘IC’; to right, it says ‘XC’; beneath that, it says ‘NIKO’.
