Description

Byzantine coin from the Latin Rulers of Constantinople Period, 1204-1261. Obverse: bust of Christ, facing front; he wears a nimbus cruciger, which is a cross within a halo; to left, he raises his hand in benediction. Reverse: bust of the Virgin Mary; she has a halo; she wears a pallium, which is a woolen cloak, and a maphorium, which is a medieval wimple worn by women; she raises her hands on either side of her in prayer. Coin is concave.

Narrative

The Latin Rulers of Constantinople captured the city after the Fourth Crusade in 1204. They were driven out by the Byzantine Greeks in 1261.
