Description

Byzantine coin from the Latin Rulers of Constantinople Period, 1204-1261. Obverse: the Virgin Mary, enthroned; she has a halo; to left, inscription says ‘MP’; to right, ‘ΘV’. Reverse: a figure, standing and facing front; this is most likely an emperor; he wears a loros, which is an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, he holds a long cross. The inscription on the obverse in translation says 'Mother of God'. Coin is concave.

History Of Use

“Billon Trachy” (denomination); Sear# 2021 or 2023.

Narrative

The Latin Rulers of Constantinople captured the city after the Fourth Crusade in 1204. They were driven out by the Byzantine Greeks in 1261.
