Description

Byzantine coin of Constans II, 641-668. Obverse: two busts, standing and facing front; to left, Constans II; to right, Constantine IV, his son; Constans II has a crown with cross and holds a long cross; Constantine IV is much smaller and is slightly diagonal. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, bust of Heraclius, Constans II’s son; to right, bust of Tiberius, Constans II’s other son; each son has a crown with cross; above, monogram; in exergue, ‘SCL’.

History Of Use

"Follis" (denomination); DO# 181 ?; Sear# 1110 ? Monogram corresponds to number 35 in Sear catalogue. Constantine IV on the obverse may be in a diagonal position because the coin was poorly stamped, or he could be an unknown figure from a previous coin, meaning the coin was overstruck.
