Description
Wooden carving of a squatting figure with its knees drawn up to its body, resting its elbows on its knees and its chin on the ends of its arms. The figure is carved on a base which has an uneven line of geometric triangles running around it which sit on top of a short wooden peg. The figure has circular carved eyes with triangles underneath. The brow is pronounced on the smooth oblong head. The figure has a circle above a triangle carved into its torso, and a geometric line of triangles carved along the arm and leg of each side, curving with the limbs and connecting the right arm and right leg, the left arm and left leg. The carvings on the right side have white lime in the carved areas, while most of the lime along the left side has flaked away.
Narrative
From the collection of Sister Twyford or Miss J. Pearce (Australia), who had served as missionaries in the Trobriand Islands in the 1920s and Dobu Island in the 1930s.
