Suspension Hook Item Number: 3183/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Carved hook. Large round face, flat in profile, sits on top of object, with protruding eyes made of seeds below a pointed brow, with scale-like carvings on forehead and cheeks. Nostrils are wide, mouth is small. Long strands of twisted plant fibre are tied through the narrow ears. The long neck is carved with circular and scale-like motifs, and connects with a large triangle below, its upper corners sharply carved into rounded spikes. A face with inset shell eyes and a smiling mouth with prominent teeth is carved into the wood. A tie of plant fibre is set through the nose. At bottom is a hook in a half circle shape, top corners elongated and curved into spikes mimicking the triangle above. It too has a carved face, with nut eyes, brow and cheeks carved with scale-like half circles, and a plant fibre tie through the nose. Mouth at bottom is wide, smiling, showing many prominent teeth. The back of the object is similar to the front.
