« A European-derived spinning top of birchwood from the Barren Ground band is wrapped with a narrow strip of tanned caribou skin at the pointed end (fig. 32h). Like some other Montagnais "toys," including the toy bow and arrow described in the section on subsistence, this one was used in divination games as well as being an amusement for children. Spectators were asked to express "wishes" and the individual indicated by the top when it stopped spinning would receive his or her wish (Speck, 1930, p. 433). »

« Une toupie en bois de bouleau et d’influence européenne provient de la bande de Barren Ground. L’extrémité de la pointe est enveloppée d’une bande étroite de peau de caribou tannée (fig. 32 h). Comme certains autres “jouets” montagnais, incluant l’arc et la flèche décrits dans la section sur la subsistance, celui-ci était utilisé durant les jeux de divination ainsi que pour divertir les enfants. Il était demandé aux spectateurs de formuler leurs « souhaits » et l’individu désigné par la toupie, lorsqu’elle cessait de tourner, était celui ou celle dont le souhait se réaliserait (Speck, 1930, p. 433). »
