Description

Reproduction of a calligraphy rubbing (part a) from a Japanese tombstone that describes the life of a famous person buried there. The text is writen in Chinese. There are six large characters in a horizontal rectangle at the top with many smaller ones below. Part b is the printed version with Japanese annotation.

Narrative

Photoreproduction of a memorial inscription for the Japanese calligrapher Kusabe Aikaku 日下部鸣鹤 (1838–1922). Written in the 1930s.

Historically, Chinese was used instead of Japanese in formal situations such as this one.
