Noh Mask Item Number: 3139/14 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Carved wooden Noh mask of “Tenjin”. Deeply carved face with protruding gold eyes, and a grimacing mouth bearing black and gold teeth. Painted with hair, a curled moustache and beard, as well as large eyebrows. The skin is a reddish-orange colour and the lips are red. There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes in each ear. There are holes carved in the eyes, nostrils, and mouth of the face. The back of the mask is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a light tan fabric bag for part a, decorated with silk embroidery in various shades of green and brown. The inside of the bag is white fabric, written on with black ink Japanese characters.
