Description

Dagger with a long, narrow blade, sharpened on both edges. Carved horn pommel in the shape of an animal head. Handle is wrapped with a hide strip and has a small piece of hair attached. Creature has inlaid abalone eyes.

Narrative

Purchased by the donor through a Sotheby's auction in 1997. According to their information, the piece was collected by George Emmons in 1896, then in the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, New York, #4/3126. Exhibited at the Institute for the Arts, Rice University, Houston, Texas in 1975.
