Fish Club Item Number: 3260/32 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Fish club carved in the form of a sea lion. Its head has prominent eyes, open mouth with teeth, and small ears. Its side has defined tail flippers, ribs and spine. The handle is shaped with finger grooves for a strong grip, and a small handle drilled through.

Iconographic Meaning

Sea lions are powerful hunters; their image is often used on clubs made to stun and kill seals or fish like large salmon and halibut, drawing on the strength such a connection might bring for a successful hunt.

Narrative

This club was likely used more for ceremonial than practical use. The spiritual strength of the clan leader and provider who owned it would be manifested in its imagery.
