Dagger Sheath Item Number: 3261/138 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Inland style hide sheath covered with red cloth. Beadwork on front and along the edge of sheath. Main beadwork design consists of light blue, pink and yellow flowers, along with green and brown leaves. Black cloth covers the back. Red cloth handle edged with brownish cloth; blue striped cloth on back.

Narrative

The sheath may have been of Tahltan origin, however it seems to have been made to hold a Tlingit bi-pointed dagger (3260/108). This type of sheath was made to wear around the neck, too keep a fighting knife close at hand. The style of beadwork suggests a possible Tahltan maker?
