Cufflinks Item Number: 3258/9 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Pair of gold cufflinks. Each piece shows the front-on face of a grizzly bear, ears prominent at top, tongue emerging from mouth. Wide pin emerges from back centre to join a chrome and gold oval at back. HAIDA ART / Reid inscription on back of each.

Iconographic Meaning

The bear design on the cufflinks was said to have been adapted from a 1850s rattle in the collection of the British Museum.

Narrative

Purchased by the donor from The Quest, in Victoria, in 1963. Item number 62 in the catalogue "Bill Reid: a Retrospective Exhibition" (1974; Vancouver Art Gallery).
