Sari Item Number: 3295/20 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Brocade sari. Long rectangular fabric embroidered with brown thread and silver metallic thread. On one end, there is a section (77 cm long) of plain fabric with brown thread embroidered. The main panel down the length, slightly offset from centre, starts with two rows of large paisley separated by small rows of repeating patterns, then changes to a repeating floral pattern, bordered by repeating diamonds. The second largest panel has a smaller pattern of repeating flowers.

Narrative

Said to be a Banaras (Varanasi) sari. Purchased by Barbara Heller's mother, from the Maiwa Foundation in Vancouver.
