Description

Pair of matching wooden phoenix figures or kkokdu (꼭두), carved and painted. Each depicts an entire phoenix, one with a red ball in its open beak (part a) and the other with its beak closed (part b). The phoenix is white, with sky blue wings and large tail feathers of white, red, grey, sky blue, pink, yellow and black. Extending from its head are a large red comb and wattle, which has a hole drilled horizontally through. The eyes are red slits, and the beak is yellow. Mounted on a wood dowel and base.

Specific Techniques

These contemporary kkokdu are based on old designs. The artists used old wood and stain/dust known as "Tae" to make them look older. The colouring is called "dancheong", and the natural pigment used was extracted from powdered stone and shell.
