Description

Kkokdu (꼭두) or wooden figure of a man on a mystical tiger-like animal. Carved from wood and painted. He wears a dark blue robe with red with yellow centre flower pattern. The man has long black hair, a stern face with black moustache and goatee, and he wears a black cap with a thick orange rim and red circular top. He holds on to the animal's neck with his right hand, and the tail with his left. The mystical animal appears like a tiger, with orange and black stripes, ears on top of head, and wide fanged mouth. On the creature's stomach there is a square notch cutout.

Specific Techniques

This contemporary kkokdu is based on old designs. The artists used old wood and stain/dust known as "Tae" to make them look older. The colouring is called "dancheong", and the natural pigment used was extracted from powdered stone and shell.
