Figure Item Number: 3327/3 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Pair of matching dragon face end boards or kkokdu (꼭두). Semi-circular panels, each with one side carved and painted. The central design is a large red-faced dragon with a bulbous pink nose, bushy black eyebrows, large circular eyes, green with white moustache(?), and a wide tooth-bearing grin. Top, centre, are four layered U-shapes. The outer arch is painted with a thick red border, and a black line borders the bottom edge. The exterior edge of the arch is painted white.
These contemporary kkokdu are based on old designs. The artists used old wood and stain/dust known as "Tae" to make them look older. The colouring is called "dancheong", and the natural pigment used was extracted from powdered stone and shell.
