Figure Item Number: 3327/2 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Horizontal dragon board or kkokdu (꼭두) composed of three pieces of wood. The design is of two intertwined dragons, one green and one yellow, facing opposite directions, with their serpent-like bodies wrapped around one another. Each dragon is painted to have scales down its body, a black ridge down its back, and dots on its face. Each dragon holds a red ball in its mouth. There is a small square notch cutout beneath each dragon's head to mount to semicircular face boards. A single hole is drilled down the centre of the piece to mount a wooden figure or Kkokdu.

Specific Techniques

This contemporary kkokdu is based on old designs. The artists used old wood and stain/dust known as "Tae" to make them look older. The colouring is called "dancheong", and the natural pigment used was extracted from powdered stone and shell.
