Two tiered, pleated xibelani skirt. Skirt ties at the back with the ends of an unbleached cotton strand that spans the waist of the skirt. Both tiers have the same colours and patterns. The front of the skirt is red with repeating groups of black, white, green, red and dark purple vertical stripes. The rest of the skirt is black with repeating groups of green, red, black, light blue and white vertical stripes. The bottom of the top tier has a silk-like ribbon running along the edge and has two strands of white beads underneath it. Towards the bottom edge of the bottom tier another silk-like ribbon runs horizontally around the skirt. Below the ribbon, between the groups of stripes on both the red and black portions, are dots made up of white beads. Both tiers are hemmed with black thread.

History Of Use

In the xibelani dance, Tsonga women wear a skirt around their waist and shake from the waist. The xibelani skirt is designed to make the wearer's hips look bigger, to emphasize the shaking.
