Description

Brooch of a filigree fish in profile. Fish has a small red jewel-like eye (glass or mineral?). A 25 Kurus Mehmed V coin is inset by the tail. The size and shape of the coin blends with the scales on the fish's body. The coin shows an open laurel wreath with a five-pointed star between the tips at top. In the centre, translated from Arabic "May he be victorious. Struck in Constantinople. 1327", while the reverse of the coin is plain. There are six small metal globules on various points of the fish. The back has a large pin, extending horizontally along the length of the fish.

Narrative

This collection of North African (Berber) and Yemeni jewelry (3395/1-12) is said to have been purchased by the donor's parents in the 1990s, from bazaars in Tripoli, Libya.
