Description

Fragment of a woman's head cloth panel. Textile is square in shape and coloured dark cream. Grid of rectangles across entire surface. Vertical borders are tight braids, horizontal borders are flat bands. Interior of grid rectangles are gauze. Fragment is stitched to grey coloured fabric, secured to off-white matboard.

Narrative

Collected in Peru before the 1970s by Ina VanStan, a Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Florida State College for Women (Florida State University) from the 1940s to c. 1966. VanStan later gifted her collection to the donor. A large amount of the donation was used for teaching at the University of Alberta while others were mainly small study fragments.

Specific Techniques

Done in a complex gauze weave. 2/2 gauze crosses in alternate alignment, with 1/1 gauze crosses in alternate rows. 4/4 or 6/6 gauze crosses at intervals, vertically aligned. There are horizontal bands of plain weave at intervals.
